Daily medication of MSN, Cordaflex, fast track, and monthly injections of Legend (injected in vein). Also applied cold compresses to left front carpus (knee) until swelling subsided.
Services Performed EFFLEURAGE MASSAGE ACUPRESSURE Other [see Notes]
NOTE: Massage is soft tissue manipulation only and is not a substitute for veterinary treatment.
Massage was performed to alleviate the muscle tightness that resulted from the impact of the fall he experienced. Muscle tightness and knots appeared to be concentrated in the neck, shoulder, and front legs.

#1: Serratus Ventralis (cervical portion) was very tight. Used a combination of Compression (loose fists) and Percussion strokes to release muscle tension. #2: Trapezius (cervical portion) had a knot. Used Compression (a rhythmic pumping action employing the palm and heal of hand administered in an inward and upward manner using a slight twist of forearm) to alleviate muscle spasms. #3: Subclavius (anterior deep pectoral) had knots. Steadily maintained Deep Direct Pressure to obstruct blood flow in that area and break up knots. Deep Direct Pressure interferes with muscle spasms and neutralizes chronic pain and holding patterns.

#1: Serratus Ventralis (cervical portion) was very tight. Used Compression (a rhythmic pumping action employing the palm and heal of hand administered in an inward and upward manner) to alleviate muscle spasms. And Applied Cross-fiber Friction (deep pressure and moving a fingertip, thumb or a knuckle over a knot or cord , transversely across the muscle fibers) to help restore muscle tissue mobility and break down adhesions.

#1: Extensor Carpi Radialis #2: Common Digital Extensor #3: Lateral Ulnar (extensor carpi ulnaris) - Applied heal presses and used tips of the thumbs (thumb bands) across the grain of the muscle to restore tissue mobility and break down any adhesions in the muscle tissue. Shadow liked these strokes and wanted to have them continued for about five minutes on each side.
Right side of the horse - same as the left side, but the leg muscles were not showing the same intensity of tightness, probably because the impact of the fall was to the left front leg.

#1: Triceps #2: Anterior Superficial (descending) Pectoral #3: Brachialis #4: Extensor Carpi Radialis felt congested. Used Muscle Squeezing to decongest, relax muscle tension and increase circulation.
Owner Information
Note: As owner, you have the greatest impact on your horse's health and performance.   The following suggestions will help maintain the horse's maximum performance.   If for any reason you feel that the horse's physical condition is not normal,  call your veterinarian immediately.
Since Shadow took most of the concussion of the fall on his left leg the following muscles were affected. The Flexor Carpi Radialis flexes the knee and extends the elbow The Common Digital Extensor extends the digit, extends the carpus (knee) and flexes the elbow. The Extensor Carpi Radialis is the most prominent muscle in the forearm. It extends the knee and flexes the elbow. Light massage to these areas will help them rcover faster.

Equine Massage Report - Shadow

Recommendations: Next Visit: Thursday - October 4, 2001
Amount Due: $55
In my opinion, Shadow would benefit from light exercise for the next few days to move and stretch his neck, shoulder, and leg muscles. Other horses who have experienced neck tightness have benefited from carrot stretches to increase mobility/flexion. Shadow should have a follow-up massage for the affected areas in about a week. If Shadow is still sore after light active work for the next week then he may benefit from Veterinary evaluation.
